If you’re in a Mission Viejo home built between 1985 and 2005, especially in neighborhoods like Painted Trails or Casta del Sol, there’s a fair chance your original cabinets carry the Barrette nameplate inside the door frame or on the hinge side of the box.

Identification is straightforward once you know where to look. The model sticker, when it survives, sits on the interior left stile of base cabinets or the underside of wall cabinet shelves. Barrette used a three-part code: series letter (B for builder grade, C for custom), box depth in inches, and door style number. A “C24-440” mark means custom series, 24-inch depth, raised-panel maple door. If the sticker’s gone, measure the box itself - Barrette builder-grade boxes were ½-inch particleboard with a thermofoil skin, while the custom line used ¾-inch plywood with hardwood face frames. That half-inch difference in box thickness matters when you’re matching new cabinets to existing layouts or replacing individual units without tearing out the whole run.

We also stock parts for KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone systems, but Barrette has its own hinge boring pattern - 3mm offset on the cup, not the standard 2mm - which means off-the-shelf Blum or Salice hinges won’t seat flush without a bushing kit. We carry those bushings on the truck.

Signs Your Barrette Kitchen Remodeling Is Failing

• Doors hang crooked or won’t close flush. Barrette’s original hinges used a pressed-steel cup that fatigues around year 15 in Mission Viejo’s temperature swings. The cup wall cracks microscopically, the screw holes wallow out, and the door slowly drifts. We see this most often on south-facing kitchens in Casta del Sol where afternoon heat hits hard.
• Drawer boxes sag or jump their tracks. Barrette’s builder-grade drawers rode on epoxy-coated steel slides rated for 75 pounds. Load them with cast-iron pans for a decade and the ball bearings flatten. The drawer tilts, binds, then jams completely.
• Laminate surfaces bubble or delaminate near sinks and dishwashers. The thermofoil skin on Barrette builder cabinets is PVC film vacuum-pressed to particleboard. Steam from a failing dishwasher seal or chronic sink splash gets under the edge, the adhesive softens, and the film lifts in a slow wave. Once it starts, it doesn’t stop.
• Box sides swell at the floor line. Barrette particleboard is not moisture-resistant grade. A single leaking supply line or mopped floor that pooled underneath swells the toe-kick area. The box goes out of square, doors and drawers fit poorly, and the cabinet becomes structurally compromised.
• Hardware finishes tarnish or pit. The original Barrette pulls and hinges were zinc alloy with a brushed-nickel plating. In coastal Mission Viejo air, especially within a few miles of the 5 freeway corridor, that plating fails at year 10-12 and the underlying metal oxidizes. It’s cosmetic but tells you the whole system is aging out together.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s honest work a homeowner can do and honest work that belongs to a licensed contractor. If you’re handy, you can swap Barrette hinge cups using a 35mm Forstner bit and a steady hand - the bushings we mentioned run about $8 a pair. You can also replace drawer slides, measure carefully, and use a level. What we don’t recommend: cutting countertop material (silica dust, plus most saws won’t handle quartz), moving a gas line or 220V outlet, or tearing out cabinets without checking whether they’re bearing any load from a wall or soffit. We’ve seen a Mission Viejo homeowner in Painted Trails remove what looked like a simple wall cabinet and find it was lag-bolted into a structural header.
