The critical compatibility gotcha: Ameristar used two different sash balance systems depending on production year. The part numbers are not interchangeable, and forcing the wrong balance into the jamb track will strip the pivot shoe or crack the vinyl frame.

To identify your series, check the spacer bar between the glass panes for an etched Ameristar logo and a four-digit date code, or remove the sash and photograph the balance mechanism. • Latch or lock operates but doesn’t engage the keeper. The strike plate has shifted, or the multipoint lock mechanism has worn internal cams. On Ameristar’s older vinyl frames, the screw bosses strip easily if over-tightened during adjustment.
