Signs Your Schluter Home Additions & ADU Is Failing

• Musty odor in a newly finished addition. KERDI-DS (the thicker steam-room membrane) installed upside-down will pass vapor slowly; the fleece side must face the thinset. We’ve found this twice in Painted Trails homes where the original crew was rushing to pass inspection.

DIY or Call Us?

There is no dangerous spring or live electrical component in a Schluter membrane system, but there is a precision threshold that makes DIY recovery risky. An owner can safely check: whether the drain flange is tight by hand, whether the grout is actually cracked or just dirty, and whether the Schluter profile is loose enough to wiggle. Do not attempt to peel and re-stick KERDI membrane; the fleece bond is one-shot, and trapped air bubbles create voids that hold water.

Where DIY goes wrong: mixing modified thinset with KERDI (the fleece won’t bond), skipping the flood test after pan installation, and cutting DITRA with utility-knife pressure that nicks the subfloor and creates a hard spot.
